Heat Pump Heating FAQ's

Are heat pumps only suitable for new build projects?
No, Heat Pumps can be installed into existing properties replacing Gas/Oil fired boilers and direct electric heating i.e. GE Night Store. Resulting in a large reduction in energy consumption.

Is it possible to produce domestic hot water or are heat pumps only for space heating?
Yes, Heat Pumps can produce hot water.

Do I need a new hot water tank?
Not always it depends on which heat pump is being installed and the condition of your existing equipment.

Is it possible to connet radiators to a heat pump?
Yes, Heat Pumps can be connected to radiators. In many cases, old radiators which are sized for 70°C are heavily over sized and can also be used with a water temperature of 55°C or lower. We often perform a system flush if a heat pump is being retrofitted to old equipment.

Is it possible to combine radiators and underfloor heating in the same system?
Yes, but the water temperature must then be adjusted to match the temperature requirement for the radiators. The temperature in the floor loops must be reduced to a suitable level by the use of a mixing valve or shunt connection.

Can I use separate room thermostats and programmable timers?
Yes, separate controls can be used to control the room temperatures, these will tell the system when the room requires heating/cooling. The system will then operate to achieve the set flow temperature.
